Elvis Costello and the Attractions played on June 2 at Blossom Music Center before an appreciative crowd of 6,500. Costello rocked through 25 songs relying heavily upon his new release, Brutal Youth.
While new cuts such as "13 Steps Lead Down" were well received, it was the old classics such as "The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes," and "Party Girl" that drew the strongest reaction.
"It's been a long time since these gentlemen and I have stood before you," said Costello in reference to Pete Thomas on drums, Bruce Thomas on bass and Steve Nieve on keyboards. Until this summer, Costello and his band had not toured together in over seven years.
Costello passionately belted out the classics "Hand in Hand" and "Radio, Radio." He also rocked through new cuts such as "This Is Hell" and "Clown Strike" supported by Nieve's solid keyboards.
Costello's encore performances featured "Alison," done as a medley with the classic tune "The Tracks of My Tears." The English artist's show ended with "Accidents Will Happen," a new song titled "All the Rage" and "Peace, Love and Understanding."
The Crash Test Dummies opened the evening for Costello. The Winnipeg band has gained notoriety for their hit single, "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm." The Dummies' set focused on their most recent effort, God Shuffled His Feet.
Lead singer Brad Roberts showcased his unique baritone voice on such songs as "I Think I'll Disappear Now," and "How Does A Duck Know?" Unfortunately, the band neglected their debut release, The Ghosts That Haunt Me.
