Tickets for the Elvis Costello concert on April 26 will go on sale tomorrow from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Irvine Auditorium, the Penn Union Council announced last week.
Costello will be performing solo, with Nick Lowe opening the show, for an audience restricted to University students, faculty and staff. Tickets will he sold for $12.50.
PUC Concerts Co-Chairman Maury Zeff said last week that five tickets will be sold to each person holding a University I.D.
"One person can bring his I.D. and his friend's I.D.," Zeff said.
The seating will not be assigned, but rather general admission within 13 sections of the 4500-seat Class of 1923 Ice Rink, Zeff said. Students will buy tickets to one of the three seating sections on the floor or the 10 elevated sections.
After tomorrow, PUC will be selling the tickets on Locust Walk until they are gone, Zeff added.
PUC Concerts Co-Chairman Rob Rosenheck said that the show will feature Costello's "Spectacular Spinning Songbook," a wheel with various songs on it spun by audience members to select what he plays. Costello used the wheel on his recent Blood and Chocolate tour which came to the Tower Theater last October.
Rosenheck said that PUC is anticipating a very long line at Irvine tomorrow, and he said he knew of some people who were planning to spend the night outside Irvine.
PUC Concerts Co-Chairman Stephen Bohrer said he was glad people are planning to stay in line overnight to get tickets.
"It's kind of becoming a social event, which is kind of nice," he said last week, adding that he has been getting "20 phone calls a day" about the concert.
The interest the event is generating has boosted the group's expectations for drawing more prominent bands to play at the University in the future.
"Unfortunately, in the industry Penn has the reputation of having low student support," Bohrer said. "If we are able to sell out [Elvis Costello], it will open a whole new door for us."
He added that agents and performers will respond if University students rally in droves to the Costello concert.
"It's a very close-knit industry," Bohrer explained. "People take notice of things."
Zeff said Costello will be PUC's biggest concert event in years.
"This is the biggest thing we've done since Pink Floyd and the Doors came in 1971," he said.
