REVIEW. Elvis Costello (***)

De koning vindt zijn kroon niet

Tom Zonderman

Tussen hits als '(The angels wanna wear my) red shoes' en 'Everyday I write the book' stopte hij koppig obscuurdere songs als 'Walkin' my baby back home' en 'Vicious girl'.

REVIEW. Elvis Costello (***) - The king does not find his crown

English via Google Translate...

Elvis Costello was the first to blow top thirty candles of the blues festival in Peer. The British bard song was accompanied only by a battery acoustic and electric guitars to attack the blue people, but that proved an unequal struggle. His choice for mostly intimate songs that are only distantly related to the blues, was immediately countered by a persistent gang of talkers, and soon he was playing for a half-empty tent.

'El' may not be a angry young man anymore - next month he is sixty - he showed himself stubborn to not just be a crowd pleaser. Between hits like '(The angels wanna wear my) red shoes "and" Everyday I write the book' he stopped stubbornly obscure songs like 'Walkin 'my baby back home" and "Vicious girl".

He sang "Alison", leaning back on a chair, like a jazzy crooner. Nice, but this was more something for an intimate club with dimmed lights, not a big festival tent. Costello grinned at the hubbub and challenged the audience at the front to sit down for an even more intimate "Almost Blue." On the steps

Only when he took his electric guitar in hand for "Less than zero" , you had a sense that something is happening. The crowd went into his sardonic 'hey heye's!". Watching the Detectives 'he dipped below into a pool of feedback loops and wailing police sirens. The old reggae beat with cynical in 1977 was as a new, menacing interpretation, in line with this uncanny times.

With a bleeding 'Shipbuilding', at the piano, and " For more tears", an unreleased song from the National ransom, Costello sent us quirky without bis into the night. No, this blue crowd could not crown Costello 'King of Belgium', before that he did not seem to be standing here at the right place and his setlist was too chaotic. Well, this fall at the Cirque Royal succeed him probably.
