Brutal Youth
Elvis Costello And The Attractions
Jeff Vice
It looks like Elvis Costello needs the Attractions more than they needed him.
Having gone their separate ways after Blood and Chocolate, Costello headed toward ornate pop on his previous two efforts, while members of the Attractions (drummer Pete Thomas, bass guitarist Bruce Thomas and keyboardist Steve Nieve) backed folkie-cum-Costello-soundalike John Wesley Harding.
Finally reunited after eight years, the band (which includes former Costello producer Nick Lowe on bass guitar in some instances) sounds like it's never been apart.
The wonderful Tripped at Every Step," "Clown Strike" and "13 Steps Lead Down" all crackle like vintage Costello, while "20% Amnesia" and "All the Rage" stake out tougher new ground.
While "Pony Street" and "Rocking Horse Road" sound a bit too familiar, it's great to welcome back England's original "Angry Young Man."
