Elvis Costello is not into being a star. He shuns interviews, and has denounced the music Industry. He is adamant about doing things his way, which isn't the way things in the record industry are usually done.
But Costello, who will perform with his band, the Attractions, at 8 p.m. Friday in Masonic Auditorium, appears to be mellowing some in his musical endeavors.
His latest album, Armed Forces, has received critical praise for being more polished than his previous efforts: He spent a month in the studio, a long time by his previous standards.
And the title was changed from "Emotional Fascism," from which some observers have inferred that Elvis is giving in somewhat to the star-system and record-company pressure he has so thoroughly denounced in his music and in the few interviews he has granted.
Still, there's little doubt that what's most important to Costello is his lyrics, which (in his grating voice) dominate his latest effort just as they did his previous albums.
