Elvis Costello knows a little about songwriting himself. The once and future leader of the New Wave movement returns with another assortment of gems entitled Punch the Clock. Costello captures some stunning moments on "Shipbuilding" and "Pills and Soap," two songs dealing with the Falkland's war.
Elvis still has the Attractions as his back-up band but added two female background singers and a horn section for this album. "I Write the Book" shows Costello at his best — a bouncy rhythm, vintage Costello vocal and terrific wordplay.
Costello releases new material consistently enough that it's easy to label him the most interesting songwriter in rock today. Punch the Clock is a worthy introduction to Costello's style if you haven't heard any of his older material (and there's plenty of that).
