I used Audacity to split into tracks and smooth over the encore break and tape flip with brief fades. Additional lineage: WAV > Audacity (track splits & fades) > TLH > FLAC 6 (align SB) > Foobar2000 (flac tags) Duration: 62:10 Notes: JEMS master recording. This is an excellent sounding recording capturing Elvis Costello & the Attractions on the first night of their "Wake Up Canada" tour in November 1978. They played a "secret show" the night before at the Mocambo, which Elvis references during the intro to "The Beat." They played two sets this night and JEMS recorded both. This recording includes the second known performance of "Girls Talk." JEMS also taped three nights later in London, Ontario, and on November 8th in Hamilton. Another version of this recording was torrented in March 2010 with unknown lineage. This version is a fresh 2010 transfer by JEMS from master. Additional notes: - second known performance of "Girls Talk" - tape flip after "PL&U". The next song "You Belong To Me" fades in on the opening notes. - includes two songs not played at the early show, "Stranger In The House" and "Waiting For The End Of The World." Covers: - "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" - Burt Bacharach & Hal David - "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding?" - Nick Lowe Torrent history: - first upload on Dime on September 26, 2010 40 years on .................................. and a few hours after the early show another dynamic performance by The Attractions with Elvis' voice standing up just fine to the rigours of 2 shows in quick succession. This is a longer set than the early show but once again has been brilliantly captured by JEMS and is again a Reseed from 2010. The audience is just as excited and an unknown hero shouts "The Greatest" just before Elvis starts Stranger In the House" ( sample included for his greater glory)After Lip Service Elvis says "Welcome to the late night show " and later berates the corporate attendees by saying "You can tell we're with a big company as we've got ten rows of people sitting down when everyone else is standing !" - much like his exhortations in the El Mocambo in March earlier that year. He also mentions the "secret" gig at the El Mocambo the night before by dedicating The Beat to them and dedicates This Year's Girl to all the girls in the audience who came alone - funny at the time but now somehow slightly more sinister. There's a slightly elongated instrumental section to the Bacharach I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself and the bass is subdued in the first part of Lipstick Vogue and only picks up in the final crescendo. Again there seems an increasing telepathy between the Attractions and Waiting For The End Of the World seems to these ears to demonstrate an awareness of what each member is striving musically for - it's an impressive piece of musicianship at the end of two hard gigs. Many thanks to John and Mike for their work on this, my only role was to check pitch and volume and reseed - I deserve an easy time sometimes !!
