40 years on ..................................... The quality level jumps up again with another great show from a first generation JEMS recording and the longest (in terms of songs played) show of the English Mugs tour of 1981 so far. Like Blacksburg the day before, we no longer have a piano and vocal duo with only Elvis and Steve Nieve to start but instead have a full band performance of a brand new song "Black Sails In the Sunset". This is another amazing Elvis song that got tucked away and never featured on any commercial release from its debut here until the release of "Tokyo Storm Warning" as a single in 1986. I heard it first on a recording of New York in February 1981 (obviously to follow in due course) and I loved it from the start. This performance is fully realised and played flawlessly and faultlessly. The next few songs follow the usual run as in previous setlists and then before "Clubland", Elvis announces that "there's a new record just come out yesterday - I think!" He then says the next song is called "Bloody Tuesday" when in fact it's "Opportunity" which seems a strange reference to a civil rights protest from the 60s which took place over 800 miles from College Park. Not sure why he mentions this to be honest! A stately "Alison" is followed by a riveting "Big Tears" which sounds like Pure Power Pop For Now People to steal a phrase. Martin Belmont joins after that and adds his distinctive sound to the end of "King Horse" . There's a slight glitch at the start of "Secondary Modern" and Bruce plays a little "Thank You" lick at the end of "The Beat". "Peace, Love And Understanding" is by now becoming a fixture in the set and the main set closes with "Big Sister's Clothes" before the first encore sees Glenn Tilbrook join the band for a duet on "From A Whisper To A Scream" for the first time recorded since Los Angeles on 10th January. After that there's a run of hit singles which includes Steve playing a little bit of "Singing In the Rain" in "Chelsea" and then three covers in a row, "I Can't Stand Up", "Slippin' And Slidin'" and a new song for this tour Marvin Gaye's "One More Heartache" before a climatic "Pump It Up". This is a lovely recording with no sign of fatigue within the band or Elvis and a stunning number of songs in light of the upcoming East Coast concerts to follow.
