From the opening number, Accidents Will Happen, the audience was treated to a fantastic set of some of his greatest songs, but not necessarily his greatest hits, spanning his 26-year career. Together, his rich, velvet-like vocals and Nieve's faultless keyboards glided effortlessly through the ballads from his new album North as well as many past favourites. Costello then performed solo, showing off another of his many talents, taking over on piano and treating the audience to more new material. Their enthusiastic response was rewarded with two encores in a performance lasting over two hours, a little long for some maybe, but never enough for myself. On a great night the only slight criticism was the slight lack of audience favourites such as Oliver's Army, Alison and others, but I feel Costello is trying to move on and reach a larger audience with new admirers, which I've no doubt he will achieve. That aside, it was a truly masterful performance from one of the finest singer/songwriters of recent times. Yes, the rumours are true, Elvis is very much alive and long may he continue.
