My Aim Is True

Elvis Costello

Gerry Barker

Elvis Costello is one of those artists who defy categorization. He isn't exactly New Wave, despite his rolled-up Levis, tiny lapels and swept-back hair. And although he comes close, he isn't rock 'n' roll revisionist either. We'll give him the benefit of the doubt and just leave it at "free spirit." That aptly describes this album, two sides of staccato rock and wry humor. Each track tends to sound like the one before it. I liked "No Dancing" for flair and "Watching the Detectives" for laughs. I wonder... is he putting us on?
