A weekend to remember

Margaret Collins

The self-aid concert on Saturday is set to be the most spectacular music event ever held in this country. The proceedings will be started off by Brush Shiels and will be closed by U2. It is most unfortunate that this event is coming in for quite a lot of criticism. Journalist Eamonn McCann is opposed to the event because of his Marxist beliefs. Now I wonder what Marx would have thought of the Sunday World whose success has largely been based on titillation and sensationalism. How is it that McCann's Marxist beliefs allow him to work for so long for such a commercial enterprise.

I hope Self Aid buy McCann a one way ticket to Chernobyl where he can really practice his beliefs.

Micheline McCormack reckons Self Aid is doing what politicians should already be doing and that she has already paid enough tax etc., to help the unemployed, most of whom she believes are making more money than she is — (through nixers). There is a lot of truth in what she is saying, but why be do negative?

If politicians won't do it, then someone has to try. Perhaps Micheline does not believe in FREE ENTERPRISE. School leavers who have never had a job have little chance of making a fortune on nixers. Self Help brings the HOPE.

Speaking from the Self Aid office this week, Self Aid organiser Tony Boland says he was "not one bit discouraged by the criticism of Self Aid. As long as they are talking about it, it is a good thing." His office has been flooded with applications from Community Action Groups for assistance. He is confident that the concert itself will raise £150,000.

The Concert is a sellout, but two lucky Advertiser readers have each won a pair of tickets in last week's Zhivago competition. They are Rose Collins, Ballybrit, Galway and Cathryn Griffin, 9 Whitestrand Park, Galway. The "Zhivago Kid" is really behind this project and on Saturday next 10% of the takings at Zhivago Records, Galway Shopping Centre, and Eglington Street will go directly to the Self Aid Fund. So if you buy anything from blank tapes to Albums etc., 10% of your money will go to Self Aid, which is very generous really, as the mark up on records is not very high.

Here in the Advertiser we will be doing our own thing, but for the moment as the song says "Our Lips are Sealed". You will have to tune in on Saturday to find out what we have up our sleeves.

Items will be auctioned on the Self Aid programme but this time all of the items will be guaranteed Irish.
