Elvis Costello's new The Juliet Letters is a neo-classical homage to letters of all sorts — suicide notes, junk mail, etc. By strange coincidence, it was a letter that led Costello to compose all the songs featured on a forthcoming album by former Transvision Vamp singer Wendy James. James' Now Ain't the Time for Your Tears is slated for early May release.
The album marks the first time Costello has composed an entire album's worth of tunes for another artist. Her album is the result of a letter James wrote Costello while she was touring in 1991 in which she expressed her need to change her sex kitten image into something more mature.
Two weeks later James received a letter informing her that Costello had composed an entire album's worth of songs, the demos of which would be waiting for her in London by the time she returned from touring.
In a Geffen Records press release, James describes the Costello songs as "beautifully written, melodious songs that will last forever."
