This Elvis is alive — mighty alive indeed

It's highly unlikely Mighty Like a Rose will be described as easy listening. In fact, this is an ambitious, dense piece of work — and an extremely rewarding one too.

Elvis Costello remains one of the few popular songwriters who constantly stretches the boundaries of what a pop song can be.Among the many highlights are "The Other Side of Summer," a twisted summer classic that sounds like the Beach Boys in Hell, and "So Like Candy," which was co-written by Paul McCartney.

Mighty Like a Rose is a rather dark album, but it also deep and powerful. Mighty fine stuff.
