KONZERT-TIPP

CONCERT TIP

Songwriter-icon Elvis Costello solo in St. Paul

English via Google Translate...

Lack of self-confidence not Elvis Costello. "I have so many songs that I can play for a week without repeating myself," says the singer and songwriter who was born in Liverpool 60 years ago as Declan Patrick MacManus. Two years ago, the Englishman has performed with Irish roots with a colourful vaudeville show and band in the local CCH, now he comes in the Grosse Freiheit 36. By doing so he has time only a few guitars from his collection and of course songs without end. The program includes an evening entitled "The Very Best of Elvis Costello" and that means songs from a 40 year career in unadorned form. Costello is one of the great artists, which, of course, take the risk, to stand alone on a stage. Without a band in the back that could conceal imperfections. This experienced musician has such a great aura and a distinctive voice so that he does not need this backup.

Costello's career began in the early 70s in London's pub rock scene. When he released his debut album "My Aim Is True" in 1976, he stuck already in the middle in the punk and New Wave movement just created and became one of its most important representatives. For ten years he toured with his band, the Attractions, criss-crossing Europe and recorded ten albums, some as "Imperial Bedroom" and "Punch The Clock" are milestones that time.

But Costello is one of the artists who did not want to stop. Eventually it was over with the punk attitude and the passionate hat wearers tried everything possible from: collaboration with a string quartet as well as the composition of ballet music and a chamber opera. He has worked with artists as diverse as Burt Bacharach and Roots together, concerts with musicians from all genres and wrote masterful songs like "Shipbuilding", "I Want You" and "Shabby Doll ". There will probably not be new songs heard at the Hamburg concert. "At the moment I am more than performers on the go," says Costello. "I do not constantly write about how I feel right now."
