Irma Thomas, Kim Wilson, James Cotton and Levon Helm returning to a straight blues format on this well-executed effort. Earl remains one of the most proficient blues guitar players on the scene and he sounds right at home with his illustrious partners on his finest blues outing in years. Telarc has also released Labour Of Love - The Music of Nick Lowe, which includes contributions from blues artists Joe Louis Walker, Charlie Musselwhite and Guy Davis; rockabilly legend Sleepy La Beef, modern zydeco practitioner C.J Chenier, and various pop musicians including Elvis Costello and Marshall Crenshaw. Costello and Crenshaw predictably turn in credible performances of two of the longtime pop singer / songwriter's songs but the genre artists not surprisingly sound out of place in most instances. However, this seems to be of little importance to the producers of the rapidly growing stack of tribute discs piling up these days.
Oregon vocalist/harmonicist Paul de Lay is one of the premier blues songwriters working at present and is also an outstanding harp player (his work on the difficult to master chromatic harmonica is especially imaginative). His new Evidence CD, with the hopeful title Heavy Rotation, finds the artist altering his sound a bit, dispensing with a bass guitarist and relying on Louis Pain's Hammond organ bass to solidify the bottom end of the music
