He had it taped…

Jackie

A year ago, Elvis Costello was just an ordinary computer operator in an Elizabeth Arden factory. Then one day he saw an advertisement which changed his life.

"I was leafing through a music paper when I came across an ad. for a new record company which was looking for new talent," he said.

"So I jotted down the address and took my own tape along the very same day. It was the first one they'd received, and within a week I had signed a contract!"

Elvis had recorded his tape in 1975, and had been trying to get a contract for some time.

"Actually, 1975 must have been a vintage year for musicians." Elvis grinned. "Graham Parker and the Rumour were in the studio at the same time, and so was a guy called William Borsay."

And if Mr Borsay's name doesn't ring a bell, perhaps I had better add that he went back to America shortly after and changed his name to Willy De Ville!
