Trust

Elvis Costello

Bill Lammers

In the last year and a half, Elvis Costello has given the public a lot of songs to listen to: Get Happy!! featured 20 songs on a single album and Taking Liberties offered another album filled with short, to-the-point Costello compositions.

On Trust, Costello trims the package down to a mere 14 songs on two sides and allows the length to climb perilously close to the four-minute mark on one or two songs.

Costello's singing on Trust is far more clear than on Get Happy!!, where his vocals were muddied in the mix. In fact, Trust may feature the first true attempt by Costello to croon (ala Sinatra and a pick-up Italian band, which he apparently is trying to imitate on the album cover).

Costello's recent appearance on Tom Snyder's Tomorrow Show featured him acting as a human being, making apologies for past rude behavior. Are we to understand that he has reformed, joined the establishment?

Not likely. The result of "changes" in his style, however, is to make Trust a very listenable album. And that's not all bad.
