Costello's UW concert cancelled after agent botched booking, students say

John Kiely

The Elvis Costello/Battered Wives concert scheduled for Nov. 7 at the University of Waterloo has been cancelled.

The popular British New Wave rocker was to have played the University of Waterloo's physical activities centre (PAC) and Student Federation President Rick Smit said the cancellation was caused by a booking foul-up by Concert Productions International (CPI).

Smit said the cancellation had nothing to do with a resolution passed last week by the National Union of Students meeting in London, Ont., which condemned the Battered Wives for inciting violence toward women. That led to cancellations in Hamilton, Ottawa and Saskatoon.

"No way," Smith said. "We just laughed at that resolution, it's an absurdity. If we could get Elvis Costello and Battered Wives we'd jump at the chance.

"Smit was critical of CPI for "avoiding" the Federation of Students, which normally handles concerts large enough for the PAC. According to Smit, CPI called the office which books the Humanities Theatre and Theatre of the Arts and asked to reserve "the big hall" for Nov. 7.

That request was taken to mean the 713-seat Humanities Theatre. Smit said he was called about 10 days ago by a local CPI representative checking on the booking of PAC. That, Smit said, was the first he had heard of the concert.

Smit said it was impossible to book the PAC at such a late date and an attempt to book the WLU gym also failed. The Costello/Wives concert date was then shifted to Kingston, although the federation was not informed of the change.

Smit said it was the third time a potentially profitable concert had been scotched by CPI. An attempt to bring rock singer Meat Loaf to the PAC fell through earlier this year and Blue Oyster Cult also cancelled.

Colleen Irwin of the Battered Wives recording company, Bomb Records, said they had been under the impression the cancellation was due to the student resolution, and that Bomb had not been told of the booking foul-up.

Betty Recchia, local CPI representative, confirmed there had been a foul-up in booking. Recchia said she was on holidays when the booking came up and CPI attempted to handle it from Toronto with the result that the wrong hall was reserved.
