Almost Blue
Elvis Costello
David Winkelstern
Elvis Costello was one of the original big-time new wavers. He and the Attractions brought an angry, punkish style to a wide audience.
Costello's past records had songs to pogo to. His latest, Almost Blue, is more music to chew tobacco to.
Its country sound might mean that Costello uses his thin tie these days to tie up a horse. Blue was recorded in Nashville with back-up vocals by the Nashville Edition. It also has the Doobie Brothers' John McFee playing some pedal steel guitar.
(You remember the Doobies. They're the guys who used to play hard rock and have since gotten haircuts and mellowed.)
Sometimes it makes about as much sense as a hillbilly singing a German version of Beethoven. Maybe his mom is happy, but Costello's rock fans are in for a shock.
The tunes are by folks like Hank Williams, Merle Haggard and Charlie Rich. Maybe Almost Blue was made because Costello is almost broke. Why else would an English rocker join the country bandwagon?
