CHANTONS AVEC ELVIS COSTELLO

Jean-Paul Smismans

PLAN LANGUES

LANGUAGE PLAN
Sing with Elvis Costello

The King Elvis is back with nothing less than a great album. With "Spike" Costello drives the point of quality music without worrying about modes and/or sales. He writes songs like others paint pictures or build cathedrals: he is an artist. Although for this new album he has been helped by people as prestigious as Roger McGuinn, Paul McCartney, T Bone Burnett, Cait O'Riordan, Jim Keltner, Jerry Marotta, Allen Toussaint, T-Bone Wolk, Chrissie Hynde, musicians from The Waterboys and Tom Waits, it changes nothing, these are his compositions. A song co-written with McCartney and on which he plays remains a Costello song. With his extraordinary voice and his interpretation on edge, Costello does more than sing, he interprets. Unlike many others, he sings with his guts. And so what if his voice is not in the business opportunities, Mr. Costello is in art as others are in the food, each his own.

The Title Languages Plan of the week is a poignant masterpiece, it is the sublime ballad God's Comic written in Umanak, Greenland, 750 km from the Arctic Circle. This song was written while Elvis was there on holiday and under the influence of this particular environment, he gave free rein to his imagination. As he says himself, there are years when he went to work by train and subway, he wrote about and within the scope of trouble choosing faces that he found interesting and from which he "embroidered "... Today his imagination is based on other circumstances even if the topics that concern him remain the same.

Elvis remains decidedly the king and his thirteen years of loyal service to a grateful audience has earned him, I hope, a commercial success in relation to his artistic concerns: HE deserves it.
