Sting et Costello, voix sans issue

CRITIQUE Opéra. «Welcome to the Voice», au Châtelet, décourage à force de mièvrerie.

Eric Dahan

Sting and Costello, voice hopeless

CRITICAL Opera. "Welcome to the Voice" at the Chatelet discourages forced sentimentality.

English via Google Translate...

First little run Thursday night at the Chatelet, where the audience was rather sparse to applaud Welcome to the Voice and its stars pop Sting, his son Joe Sumner and Elvis Costello. The origin of this "opera", there is a meeting between Steve Nieve, gifted pianist The Attractions Elvis Costello since the late 70s and Muriel Teodori psychoanalyst, playwright, director and partner now.

Once the participation of the former singer in The Police gained, both had no trouble convincing Deutsche Grammophon to release in 2007, a record of their work, even before it was performed in public. Hence the idea of the Chatelet to order a stage production to Paris, given to only five performances.

Clichés. The Achilles heel of this creation is less his music that included "a naivety bordering on stupidity", to quote a French film. Dionysos, worker, left his position to break into the opera which there is a diva he is in love with. Police arrest the clown, condemned by the mob and rescued by the intervention of the singer. Dionysus, free again, joins the diva at the airport for a final love duet.

It is a remake of Diva and Bourgeois and Loubard infused with borrowings from Contes d'Hoffmann by Offenbach (Dionysus is visited in a dream by three women, Carmen, Butterfly and Norma) to expand the story about this Welcome to the Voice rather suggests a year-end Star Academy show with the forced theme: the voice, love and impenetrable mysteries.

If Muriel Teodori, too little talent for writing for the stage, accumulates clichés predictably, Steve Nieve surprises by his ability to vary the styles and shapes. Of course, one looks in vain for a comprehensive plan of the work, but in the orchestral detail or arioso well rendered by three sopranos of which in Marie-Ange Todorovitch, you feel a real musical culture (Britten, John Adams).

Pedals. Also mention, trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf and saxophonist Ned Rothenberg whose orchestral soloists interventions pedals are their small hovering effect. It had already been found there twenty-five years on Broadway the little physical and vocal charisma Sting out of the pop world. His Mack the Knife in Brecht's The Threepenny Opera did not date and Dionysus here is nonexistent. Costello is less cleared, but it is not a gift as the character he plays is wicked and grotesque his voice hoarse and unsteady. A new artistic failure in Chatelet reputation that since the departure of Jean-Pierre Brossman, combines the nanars for jaywalkers. When will we return to music?
