Elvis Costello announces one-off Liverpool gig

Jade Wright

Elvis Costello has announced that his only UK concert will be in Liverpool.

The singer, who was christened in Birkenhead and finished school in Liverpool, will play the Philharmonic Hall on Monday June 28, ahead of his world tour.

Speaking exclusively to the Echo he said: "I grew up partly in London, partly in Liverpool, but it's Liverpool that really feels like home.

"On this tour I was desperate to play in the city, but the schedule wasn't right. We've moved that around now, and I'm delighted to be returning to the Phil."

Elvis played a sold-out gig at the concert hall with the Philharmonic Orchestra in 2008, but this time he will be playing with his band.

The Elvis Costello concert is part of the Phil's new summer programme, which also includes An Evening with the Liverpool 1965 FA Cup Winners Team (May 11) glamour girl Samantha Fox (June 2), comic Rhod Gilbert (September 11 and 12), singer Kate Rusby (September 23) and Al Murray The Pub Landlord (November 12).

Michael Eakin, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic's chief executive, said: "With the announcement of Liverpool Philharmonic Hall's April-September programme we're delighted to be presenting a whole host of big names including Jamie Cullum, Elvis Costello, Gil Scott-Heron, Mohamed Mounir and Kate Rusby, and again, being part of Liverpool Summer Pops 2010, Liverpool Sound City and Liverpool Arabic Arts Festival, as well as announcing a series of experimental musicians and left field jazz under the Phil's Fresh banner. There is no doubt that the Phil is a key venue at the heart of the city's music scene.

"With our continuing rich mix of presenting world class artists across a variety of music genres, in addition to a fine selection of comedy, film and spoken word events, the range of events and the quality of artists we have put together is exceptional.

It demonstrates our continuing commitment to live music and home to some of the best entertainment in the city."

Tickets for the Elvis Costello concert, priced £35 and £40, go on sale this Friday.
