Here's an unexpectedly marvelous end to a fairly dismal year of music.

In this limited-edition five-EP live set, Elvis Costello and Attractions pianist Steve Nieve perform intimate and affecting readings of compositions old and new.

Costello & Nieve (Warner Bros.) is packed with great moments, among them a seven-minute "Alison" medley that morphs into "Tracks of My Tears" and "Tears of a Clown."

Other beautifully realized gems include tunes from Costello's last studio album as well as older faves "Man Out of Time" and "Watching the Detectives."
