While this is hardly Costello's best album, bad Elvis is better than no Elvis at all. Not that there weren't good songs on Spike — the gospel flavor of "Deep Dark Truthful Mirror," the sad comments on senility in "Veronica," the creepiness of "Miss Macbeth" — but the album is long, and it drags a little towards the end. At least Costello is back to his old snotty self on the vitriolic "Tramp the Dirt Down," about Margaret Thatcher: "And when they finally lay you in the ground ... I'll tramp the dirt down." Ouch.
