==[[50 Songs For 50 Days]] (Elvis Costello’s October Surprise)==

On his [https://www.elviscostello.com/#!/50songsfor50days website], Elvis has written an introduction to a selection of 50 of his songs.  He will post one a day, starting on September 15.  He writes:

"I have created this installation of “50 Songs For 50 Days”, presenting lyrics written over the last 50 years - most of them my own - and heard on recordings made between 1977 and 2020, including several that will be issued here for the first time.
These songs were written in response to events over these many years but it strikes me that you may find something useful in them at this present moment; a joke, a motto or even a couple of dance steps to keep the blood pumping and the hot sauce at hand.
I hope these songs will amuse, console or even infuriate, because passive indifference is hardly the way forward.
From September 15th, we will bring you a different song every day for the next 50 days via the miracle of your favourite streaming service and the wonder of the internet. Please stay tuned."

Elvis is working with Universal Music on a major reissue campaign which will start with a six-record set based on his 1979 album Armed Forces (he told [[Billboard, September 19, 2020|Billboard magazine]]). Elvis said that his “catalogue has been in some disarray for a number of years” and that he recently “went to a meeting at a record company for the first time since the ’90s” to discuss reissue plans”.
'''''Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink''''' — memoir by Elvis Costello.

It promises "his unique view of his unlikely and sometimes comical rise to international success, with diversions through the previously undocumented emotional foundations of some of his best known songs and the hits of tomorrow. The book contains many stories and observations about his renowned co-writers and co-conspirators, though Costello also pauses along the way for considerations on the less appealing side of infamy."
He added: “who better than the person who wrote the songs to tell you what else is there [in the archive] – things that I never released, live recordings”.

He tells the interviewer that Armed Forces will be “the first” thing to come out and that “the package will include three live recordings ranging from the summer of ’78 to the summer of ’79, so it traces the development of the Attractions as a live act, from a club combo to a successful pop group – it’s quite interesting to hear. I had expert help in photographing my handwritten notebooks. So you’re getting something”

50 Songs For 50 Days (Elvis Costello’s October Surprise)

On his website, Elvis has written an introduction to a selection of 50 of his songs.

Upcoming releases

Armed Forces Reissue
Elvis is working with Universal Music on a major reissue campaign which will start with a six-record set based on his 1979 album Armed Forces (he told Billboard magazine). Elvis said that his “catalogue has been in some disarray for a number of years” and that he recently “went to a meeting at a record company for the first time since the ’90s” to discuss reissue plans”.

The November 2020 issue of Mojo Magazine suggests that the live recordings to form part of the reissue package include Elvis and the Attractions at the PinkPop Festival in June 1979.

Painted From Memory Compilation
Elvis also told Billboard magazine that "we’re making a compilation based on Painted From Memory in the hope that we’ll complete the picture with some other songs we’ve written that people still haven’t heard". Elvis and Burt Bacharach worked on additional songs to form part of a stage musical version of Painted From Memory, but that project appears to have stalled. An expanded release of Painted From Memory could include those new songs.

This Year's Model Spanish language version
Producer Sebastian Krys has been working on a version of This Year's Model on which Elvis' vocals are removed and replaced with Spanish language lyrics sung by various artists. In his interview with Billboard magazine, Elvis says that "we've done a new version of one of my albums from my catalogue, and that’s going to come out next April". Will it be called Modelo De Este Año?

It promises "his unique view of his unlikely and sometimes comical rise to international success, with diversions through the previously undocumented emotional foundations of some of his best known songs and the hits of tomorrow. The book contains many stories and observations about his renowned co-writers and co-conspirators, though Costello also pauses along the way for considerations on the less appealing side of infamy."

Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes released November 11, 2014

Lost On The River album cover.jpg

Elvis Costello is part of a group assembled by producer T Bone Burnett to create music for unheard 1967 Bob Dylan lyrics for Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes, an album released on November 11, 2014. The deluxe CD is available to order here: AmazonAmazon.uk.

The other members of the group are Rhiannon Giddens, Taylor Goldsmith, Jim James, and Marcus Mumford. The group - "The New Basement Tapes", made their first live performances via three national television appearances in the USA in November. They performed on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on November 10, 2014, Ellen on November 14, 2014 and Jimmy Kimmel Live on November 19, 2014. They also played a concert in Los Angeles at the Montalban Theatre, and recorded a number of interviews and performances for radio broadcast.

According to the Los Angeles Times, "One intriguing facet of the current project is the collaboration among the participants. Each has come up with his or her own music for many of the lyrics, resulting in multiple versions of the same songs and allowing a perspective on the ways different artists respond to Dylan’s lyrics. Each artist takes the lead on the tracking of his or her song, and all provide suggestions and whatever instrumental and vocal support the others require, with Burnett overseeing final production."

Speaking to the London Evening Standard at an event in July to launch the album, Elvis said there had been a number of traps to avoid: "One is to go back in time, the other is to be intimidated and the third is to think that you are Bob and The Band because we're not. We're us, playing today with our own histories and our own preferences."

The making of the album is the subject of the documentary '’Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes continued ’’. A trailer for the documentary is available here

Five "lyric videos" have been released: Nothing To It (sung by Jim James), Married To My Hack (sung by Elvis), When I Get My Hands On You (sung by Marcus Mumford), Spanish Mary (sung by Rhiannon Giddens), and Liberty Street (sung by Taylor Goldsmith).

In an interview with Billboard Magazine published in August 2015 T-Bone Burnett commented: "Well, I’m thrilled with the way the recording sessions came out. That project was one of the most extraordinary events of my life, and I feel like it’s still a work in progress. We got five people that didn’t know each other together for 10 days and wrote and recorded 45 new songs. It was epic, and I don’t think that really came across yet. There’s a film we’re editing now that I think may end up being the definitive version of that whole event, a concert film we shot at the Montalban, where everybody backed each other up with a vengeance. It was a one-time, one-night-only show, and Marcus Heiny, who has done some stuff with us at Capitol before and has done a lot of stuff with Mumford and Sons, came and filmed it. It was guerrilla filmmaking, to be sure. I mean, we decided to do it that morning, practically. That show was really the fruit of the whole experience. By the way, there are another 20-some-odd songs that we haven’t released yet, and we might put out another album of that stuff next year. I look forward to being a steward of all of that material over the next several years."

Wise Up Ghost album cover.jpg

Wise Up Ghost by Elvis Costello and The Roots was released on September 16, 2013 in the UK and September 17 in the US. Drummer Questlove tells Billboard: "We had 13 or 14 songs, but then we said, 'Ooh! Wait a minute! Let's replace four of these songs with four better songs! And now we have the tightest 12-14 song collection out of about 20 songs that we made."

A press release claimed a small number of test pressings were distributed as white labels on Record Store Day on April 20, but no copies have surfaced online, and a Rolling Stone article suggests the album was not completed until June 2013. A video for "Walk Us Uptown" was released July 22, 2013.

EC and The Roots were joined by Diane Birch and La Marisoul to preview songs from the album live on September 16, 2013 at the Brooklyn Bowl in New York City and appeared on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon the following night and on September 19, 2013. "Solo shows are inevitably the most intense because it's you and the audience and nothing else," ... "More than in any other type of concert you might play, the lyrical content is important in a solo performance because when you don't have the distraction of a big arrangement, or the volume of a band, you're making the feeling and the meaning of a song really the key."”.
