Remastered expanded reissue of Armed Forces

AF US album cover 2.jpg

An expanded remastered vinyl box set reissue of Armed Forces was released worldwide on November 6, 2020.

"Personally curated by Elvis Costello, The Complete Armed Forces is the definitive statement of the legendary songwriter and musician’s revered and essential 1979 album, featuring the classic hits “Accidents Will Happen,” “Green Shirt,” “Oliver’s Army” and “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding.”

Leaving no musical stone unturned, no lyric notebook unrifled through and no detail left out, this new super deluxe edition vinyl box set is a thorough excavation of Costello’s vault from this metamorphic period of his early beginnings, painting as complete a picture as possible of the events that led to the making of the album, its creation, and the wild success that followed for him, and his band The Attractions, and ignited his career. Armed Forces is explored across nine pieces of vinyl (3 12-inch LPs, 3 10-inch LPs and 3 7-inch singles), including a new 2020 remaster of the album, B-sides, alternate versions and outtakes, demos, and a slew of live recordings – including 23 unreleased live tracks taken from three especially riotous concerts."

To promote this release, Elvis is curating a playlist of tracks from the box set and songs by other artists that relate to them. Each day or so he adds to it with a note explaining the link between the songs. This goes under the title "Armed Forces 33⅓ Network" - the playlist is here.

The Complete Armed Forces can be streamed or purchased in two vinyl versions – 180-gram black vinyl and limited edition 180-gram multi-color opaque vinyl. Available here: AmazonAmazon.uk

Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink

Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink

Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink — memoir by Elvis Costello.

It promises "his unique view of his unlikely and sometimes comical rise to international success, with diversions through the previously undocumented emotional foundations of some of his best known songs and the hits of tomorrow. The book contains many stories and observations about his renowned co-writers and co-conspirators, though Costello also pauses along the way for considerations on the less appealing side of infamy."

Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes released November 11, 2014

Lost On The River album cover.jpg

Elvis Costello is part of a group assembled by producer T Bone Burnett to create music for unheard 1967 Bob Dylan lyrics for Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes, an album released on November 11, 2014. The deluxe CD is available to order here: AmazonAmazon.uk.

The other members of the group are Rhiannon Giddens, Taylor Goldsmith, Jim James, and Marcus Mumford. The group - "The New Basement Tapes", made their first live performances via three national television appearances in the USA in November. They performed on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on November 10, 2014, Ellen on November 14, 2014 and Jimmy Kimmel Live on November 19, 2014. They also played a concert in Los Angeles at the Montalban Theatre, and recorded a number of interviews and performances for radio broadcast.

According to the Los Angeles Times, "One intriguing facet of the current project is the collaboration among the participants. Each has come up with his or her own music for many of the lyrics, resulting in multiple versions of the same songs and allowing a perspective on the ways different artists respond to Dylan’s lyrics. Each artist takes the lead on the tracking of his or her song, and all provide suggestions and whatever instrumental and vocal support the others require, with Burnett overseeing final production."

Speaking to the London Evening Standard at an event in July to launch the album, Elvis said there had been a number of traps to avoid: "One is to go back in time, the other is to be intimidated and the third is to think that you are Bob and The Band because we're not. We're us, playing today with our own histories and our own preferences."

The making of the album is the subject of the documentary '’Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes continued ’’. A trailer for the documentary is available here

Five "lyric videos" have been released: Nothing To It (sung by Jim James), Married To My Hack (sung by Elvis), When I Get My Hands On You (sung by Marcus Mumford), Spanish Mary (sung by Rhiannon Giddens), and Liberty Street (sung by Taylor Goldsmith).

In an interview with Billboard Magazine published in August 2015 T-Bone Burnett commented: "Well, I’m thrilled with the way the recording sessions came out. That project was one of the most extraordinary events of my life, and I feel like it’s still a work in progress. We got five people that didn’t know each other together for 10 days and wrote and recorded 45 new songs. It was epic, and I don’t think that really came across yet. There’s a film we’re editing now that I think may end up being the definitive version of that whole event, a concert film we shot at the Montalban, where everybody backed each other up with a vengeance. It was a one-time, one-night-only show, and Marcus Heiny, who has done some stuff with us at Capitol before and has done a lot of stuff with Mumford and Sons, came and filmed it. It was guerrilla filmmaking, to be sure. I mean, we decided to do it that morning, practically. That show was really the fruit of the whole experience. By the way, there are another 20-some-odd songs that we haven’t released yet, and we might put out another album of that stuff next year. I look forward to being a steward of all of that material over the next several years."

50 Songs For 50 Days (Elvis Costello’s October Surprise)

On his website, Elvis wrote an introduction to a selection of 50 of his songs. He posted one a day, starting on September 15 2020. He wrote:

"I have created this installation of “50 Songs For 50 Days”, presenting lyrics written over the last 50 years - most of them my own - and heard on recordings made between 1977 and 2020, including several that will be issued here for the first time. These songs were written in response to events over these many years but it strikes me that you may find something useful in them at this present moment; a joke, a motto or even a couple of dance steps to keep the blood pumping and the hot sauce at hand. I hope these songs will amuse, console or even infuriate, because passive indifference is hardly the way forward. From September 15th, we will bring you a different song every day for the next 50 days via the miracle of your favourite streaming service and the wonder of the internet. Please stay tuned."

Obituaries

Paddy Callaghan, aka Xavier Valentine, Elvis' "minder" and travelling companion died on March 5, 2021. Paddy was familar to fans who would wait to meet Elvis at the stage door after a concert. He also had a role in the early Spectacular Spinning Songbook shows - "your guide from your place in the stalls to your place in the stars" -managing the flow of audience members to join Elvis on stage to spin the Wheel. Elvis has published an appreciation of Paddy here.

Gary Stewart, who oversaw the reissue of many of Elvis' albums on Rhino Records (and then left the label to serve as the chief music officer for Apple's iTunes) died on 12 April, 2019 aged 62. Elvis has written an appreciation of Stewart here.

Milo Lewis, Elvis' Production Manager, died at home, suddenly, on February 18, 2016, aged 61. Milo worked with Elvis throughout his career, and had been his production manager on tour since 1983. Elvis wrote an appreciation of Milo here. A West Ham Football Club scarf was draped over an onstage monitor at the shows following his death as a mark of respect to Milo (who was a West Ham fan).

Allen Toussaint, the New Orleans composer, producer and performer, died on November 9, 2015 aged 77, while on tour in Europe. He co-wrote and recorded The River In Reverse with Elvis in 2005, and subsequently toured and performed with Elvis in the US, Canada, Europe and Japan. His last concert appearance with Elvis was fittingly in New Orleans, in March 2015.

Other news

  • Americana Sin Lagrimes Ahead of his appearance at the online 2021 UK Americana Music Awards where he received a Lifetime Achievement Award, Elvis shared "a treasure hunt of songs, a shoal of red herrings for you to smoke or roast. Some of them are tunes that I wrote in an echo to earlier signals from another, newer world, others were written or recorded on-location, a few of them in cahoots with actual Americans." Read more here.
  • Elvis is one of 12 composers who have written pieces inspired by chapters of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, which was published 150 years ago (in 1865). Although the musical has not been staged, Elvis has told Billboard Magazine that a new compilation release of Painted From Memory will include "some other songs we've written that people still haven't heard".

Random Quote:

"Solo shows are inevitably the most intense because it's you and the audience and nothing else," ... "More than in any other type of concert you might play, the lyrical content is important in a solo performance because when you don't have the distraction of a big arrangement, or the volume of a band, you're making the feeling and the meaning of a song really the key."”.
