Costello and Lowe lead store's bash

British rockers Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello led the chorus at a 21st anniversary gathering for Village Music, a tiny second-hand record shop frequented by music stars in Mill Valley, California.

The store, 16 kilometres from San Francisco, is jammed with owner John Goddard's collection of vintage rock and soul posters.

The parade of music legends that performed last Monday included Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, Sammy Hagar of Van Halen, Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Pete Sears of the Starship and Commander Cody.

The audience comprised half musicians, and Costello confessed that it was "more nerve-racking than getting up before 7,000 people". Goddard enjoyed most of the marathon show from a front-row seat.

When asked how he signed up Costello, a popular British songwriter and a regular store customer, Goddard had a simple answer.

"I asked him," he said.
