The single, "The Other Side Of Summer," is released by WEA on April 22. It's taken from the forthcoming Mighty Like A Rose album, which is due for release on May 13. Both mark Costello's first new recorded output since Spike in February 1989. The LP was mixed and partly recorded in Los Angeles with producer Mitchell Froom, who's worked with Los Lobos, Crowded House and The Pretenders. Kevin Killen who worked closely with Costello on Spike, engineered the LP. Costello is joined on Mighty Like A Rose by bassist Jerry Scheff, who appeared on King Of America and Spike and who's also played with Elvis Presley and Gram Parsons, Marc Ribot from Tom Waits' band, former Attraction Pete Thomas and veteran Los Angeles session keyboardist Larry Knechtel. There are also guest appearances from guitarist James Burton and Costello's father Ross McManus, who plays trombone on a track called "Invasion Hit Parade." In addition, Costello's wife Cait wrote another song, "Broken." Full track listing, exclusive to the Maker, is: "The Other Side Of Summer," "Hurry Down Doomsday (The Bugs Are Taking Over)," "How To Be Dumb," "All Grown Up," "Invasion Hit Parade," "Harpie's Bazaar," "After The Fall," "Georgie And Her Rival," "Interlude: Couldn't Call It Unexpected No.2," "Playboy To A Man," "Sweat Pear," "Broken," "Couldn't Call It Unexpected No.4." Costello will be accompanied by Knechtel, Scheff, Ribot and Thomas under the name of The Rude 5 when he goes on tour in the summer. Dates start with a six-night residency at Hammersmith Odeon running from July 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7 then continue with gigs at Bristol Colston Hall (9), Liverpool Royal Court (12), Glasgow Barrowlands (13), Edinburgh Playhouse (14) and Lerwick Clickimin (16). Tickets for the tour go on sale from the box offices at 10.30am this Friday (12). They range in price from £16.50 down to £7.50. Finally, Costello is currently featured alongside Jane's Addiction, Suzanne Vega and The Cowboy Junkies on Deadicated, an LP of Grateful Dead cover versions.
