Elvis Costello joins the boys

Melody Maker

Elvis Costello makes his television acting debut in a new drama series by Alan Bleasdale — author of Boys From The Black Stuff.

Costello, who's written the theme music for the seven-part series Scully, makes guest appearances alongside Liverpool footballers Kenny Dalglish and Bruce Grobbelar.

Granada TV, who've supplied the series to Channel 4, say it concerns "the humorous adventures of a 16-year-old Liverpool street urchin who's obsessed with becoming a professional footballer."

The series, which begins on May 14 at 8pm, goes out for half an hour a week, with the last episode expanding to an hour.

No one is saying yet whether Costello is featured in every episode. And it's not clear what part he plays. A spokesman for F-Beat Records would only comment: "It's a small part Elvis was asked to do by Alan Bleasdale who wrote the series."

Elvis, meanwhile, is set to appear on Radio 1 on April 21 for the "Annie In Conversation" show with Annie Nightingale. Costello appears with Kim Wilde, and according to the BBC, finds a "great deal in common" with her.

Only last week, he told the MM of a new Imposter single called "Peace In Our Time."

Other media news this week: The Questions are "In Concert" on Radio 1 on April 21.

A Marvin Gaye interview with Paul Gambaccini is repeated on Radio 1 with the first part going out at 4pm on April 22.

Paul McCartney gives an interview to Radio Leicester on April 22.

Clare Grogan co-presents a new series of Razzmatazz, starting on April 18.
