Paolo Hewitt receives flak for his review of the Christmas show, December 27, 1980, National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham.
Resident legend-in-making Paolo “La Bamba” Hewitt certainly stirred things up when he started whacking into Rockpile after their performance at Elvis Costello’s Christmas bash in Birmingham.

Lashing out in all directions, Hewitt damned Dave Edmunds for wearing flared jeans, Nick Lowe for having grey hair and Billy Bremner was utterly chastised for obviously enjoying a drink. “Would you put a picture of Rockpile on your bedroom wall?” he asked flamboyantly.
Yes, answered – oh – scores of irate Rockpile addicts; “I am used to people complaining that Rockpile are not inventive and have become accustomed to the fact that only Allan Jones and myself seem to have any clue to good music and first class entertainment,” begins the enormously perceptive and no double highly attractive Mrs Shirley Field, objecting to Hewitt’s blinkered criticism.
“Rockpile DO play sober, because I have witnessed that,” she continues (So SHE was the one!).
She finishes by admitting that she has a picture of them on her bedroom wall. So does Wendy of Tonbridge, who thinks they are “very sexy”; so does her friend. So does Debbie Tomsett of Ashford in Kent, who even found description of Bill Bremner’s “beer-gut” exaggerated.
“When I saw Rockpile at the Hammersmith Palais, Billy was in perfect shape,” she writes, “despite a bad cold”
So it was a cold …
