Costello in the middle

Melody Maker

Elvis Costello, who will be touring throughout March, is at the centre of a complex legal row with Radar Records and his manager, Jake Riviera, on one side, and WEA Records on the other.

The disagreement, which finally made it to court this week on the strength of an injunction issued by WEA, follows that company's decision to withdraw their backing from Radar and to absorb the label.

Riviera, who claims that Costello's contract with Radar, hence WEA, is completed, is planning to launch his own label, F-Beat, with Costello's new single, "I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down", on Friday this week, and it is this release that WEA went to court to stop.

The contractual argument hinges around Riviera's claim that the artists managed by his Riviera-Global company, Costello and Nick Lowe, were tied to Radar only by verbal agreement with former Radar head Andrew Lauder. As Lauder and Radar are no longer connected, there is no further obligation to WEA, claims Riviera.

Meanwhile, the court case doesn't affect Costello and the Attractions as a touring band, and they take to the road on March 1 for a 25-date tour that breaks new ground with a number of venues not previously used for rock gigs.

The tour starts at West Runton Pavilion on March 1, then: Margate Winter Gardens (March 2), Folkestone Leas Cliff Hall (3), Hastings Pier Pavilion (4), Lincoln Drill Hall (6), Peterborough Wirrina Stadium (7), Halifax Civic Hall (9), Matlock Pavilion (10), Shrewsbury Tiffanys (11), Merthyr Tydfil Tiffanys (13), Llanelli Glen Ballroom's (14), Aberystwyth Great Hall (16), Colwyn Bay Pier (17), Southport Floral Hall (18), Wakefield Tiffanys (19), Sunderland Mayfair (21), Lasswade Sports Centre (22), Dunfermline Kinema (23), Ayr Pavilion (24), Carlisle Market Hall (25), Stafford Stychfield Hall (27), Leamington Spa Pavilion (28), Swindon Oasis (29), Yeovil Johnson Hall (3E) and St Austell Riviera Lido (31).

Tickets for all gigs are £3.

Producer / songwriter Clive Langer has been signed for a world-wide management deal to Riviera's company.
