NEW YORK — Giants of country and pop music including Jessi Colter, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Tanya Tucker and Tammy Wynette pay tribute to the acknowledged "King of Country Music" when Home Box Office presents George Jones: With a Little Help From His Friends, a foot-stomping musical special debuting Saturday, July 11, at 8 p.m., it was announced by Iris Dugow, vice president, special programming for HBO.
"This has been a landmark year for George Jones," said Dugow, "First, he won the Grammy Award for Best Male Country Singer, then he was voted Male Vocalist of the Year by the Country Music Association. Home Box Office is honored to present a special musical tribute in which Jones' fellow artists applaud one of their own."
Using the concept and some of the tunes from Jones' 1979 album My Very Special Guests as the framework for the in-concert special, "With a Little Help From His Friends" was videotaped before a capacity crowd at the Country Club in Los Angeles. The seventy-five minute musical extravaganza includes such country and pop standards as: "Golden Ring," sung by Jones and former wife and musical partner Tammy Wynette; "Good Hearted Woman," a Jones-Waylon Jennings duet; "Stranger In The House," with New Wave rocker Elvis Costello and Jones; Jones's poignant multi award-winning solo, "He Stopped Loving Her Today," and a duet between Jones and his and Wynette's 10-year-old daughter, Georgette, "Daddy, Come Home."
