Elvis Costello and the RSNO

Sue Wilson

It might seem a long stretch from punk to the symphony orchestra, but such is Elvis Costello's singular career.

In the past decade, he has collaborated with Burt Bacharach, mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie Von Otter, the 52-piece Metropole Orkest jazz ensemble and New Orleans R&B legend Allen Toussaint. He spent a year as artist-in-residence at UCLA and composed his first full-length orchestral work, Il Sogno (The Dream), which was commissioned by an Italian dance company for a new ballet adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream.

His current orchestral programme has been evolving since 2000, when he and Attractions/Imposters keyboard player Steve Nieve began performing with orchestras across the US. After a brief, overture-style excerpt from Il Sogno, his forthcoming UK shows will comprise arrangements of songs going back as far as 1977 — the year of his debut, My Aim Is True — and up to the present day.

The line-up will also feature bass, drums and saxophone, and conductor Clark Rundell. As well as such classic Costello as "Watching The Detectives," "Shipbuilding" and "All This Useless Beauty," the setlist also takes in covers of tracks by Charles Mingus and Charles Aznavour, and the first full orchestral performance of three extracts from The Secret Songs, composed for the Royal Danish Opera as part of the Hans Christian Andersen bicentenary in 2005.

Sat 21st June, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, 2 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, 7.30pm, £35.
