Elvis Costello & The Roots team-up on 'Wise Up Ghost'

Arwa Haider

The combination of erudite British songsmith Elvis Costello and Philly hip hop/funk mavericks The Roots isn't so far-fetched; both acts have proved broad-ranging collaborators (The Roots have worked with John Legend and Betty Wright), and Costello has a long-standing admiration for blues and soul. Wise Up Ghost stemmed from their meeting on US TV show Late Night With Jimmy Fallon (The Roots are house band), here the material has that high-definition sheen. Costello's characteristically cutting vocals jostle through the dub-funk undertow of opening track "Walk Us Uptown" but the album is also laced with elegant strings and sinister undertones (particularly on lullaby waltz "Tripwire").

Costello devotees are likely to be cheered by these jazzy vibes and diatribes; fans of The Roots might find Questlove and co sounding restrained – arch over hip.
