Elvis Costello

Arie Crown Theater, Chicago

Jim Ohlschmidt

They called it "An Evening With Elvis Costello," and indeed, his solo performance at Chicago's Arie Crown Theater Tuesday night was the most intimate and personal of glimpses this talented singer-songwriter has afforded his devoted following.

With only his own electric or acoustic guitar or piano playing as accompaniment, Costello let his songs and his emotional convictions stand naked. For 105 minutes, he performed songs from all his albums, new material from his forthcoming record and some choice songs written by relative unknown songwriters. He also selected some famous ones, like the Beatles "Yes It Is" and Bob Dylan's "Threw It All Away," which was just terrific.

The performance emphasized how Costello's vocal capacities have widened over the years and how his songwriting has developed. But the source of Costello's talents always spring from his depth and intensity of his feelings and beliefs. Those were never more in evidence.
