He stood backstage, straw hat on his head, still dressed in a baggy suit. Unshielded by his big, chunky glasses, his face revealed expressive, button eyes.
This was the mean, bad, anti-social Elvis Costello? Costello seemed more than happy to sign autographs with the backstage crowd and chat briefly after his Alpine Valley concert Saturday night.
He called his progress in the United States, "slow but steady, especially since we don't get any support from radio. We're playing for more people then ever on this tour and we've gotten enthusiastic responses everywhere."
When asked what he does during his free moments in America, Costello responded, "I haunt record stores. I'm a record buying fool. Mostly I just pick up what interests me, unless I see something I know that I'm missing, like an old Chet Baker record."
