Eh ! T-Bone Burnett ! On a trouvé un tas de textes de Dylan, du temps des Basement Tapes. Manquent les musiques. Ça te tente ? Dylan veut. Ah d’accord, j’appelle des copains. Eh ! Elvis Costello, Marcus Mumford, Jim James, Taylor Goldsmith, Rhiannon Giddens, ça vous dirait ? On ferait comme les gars du Band avec Dylan en 1967, on enregistrerait ça ensemble ? Je résume, mais en gros, c’est le projet. Et ça donne ça. Pas du tout I’m Not There (le film où chacun fait le Bob), un Costello ne se la jouerait pas Dylan, mais une cohérence dans l’approche : roots’n’rock supérieur. Parfois des musiques différentes pour un même texte, fascinantes variantes. Et textes forts : rejets pour lui, trésors pour eux. When I Get my Hands on You n’est pas la tendre Lay Lady Lay, mais le sentiment saisit. En cet automne où l’on obtient AUSSI en coffret la totale des Basement Tapes, ce disque fait le pont et la démonstration. De Dylan à aujourd’hui, pertinence.
