Müssen, sollen, können Rockmusiker mit jedem neuen Album Sensationelles, Überragendes, Phänomenales etc. auf den Markt werfen? Wohl kaum. Muß man immer gleich angesäuert reagieren, wenn der vielstrapazierte ab-so-lu-te Hammer ausbleibt? Mit Einschränkungen war dies auch schon das Problem bei Get Happy, das offensichtlich infolge einer Promotion-Kanonade mehr oder minder abgesoffen ist (trotz Nick Lowe). Trust ist Veröffentlichung Nr. 5 von Elvis II. Im Gegensatz zu Graham Parker und Joe Jackson hat er noch alle beisammen, was die Begleitband betrifft. Diese Formation (erweitert um Martin Belmont und Glenn Tilbrook) spielt nicht besser und nicht schlechter als zuvor. Für Elvis' Kompositionen gilt dasselbe: Stück für Stück sorgfältig, Chorus auf Chorus mit der gewissen Ohrenfreundlichkeit. Und mir ist weder die Euphorie durch die Gelenke geschossen, noch lege ich die LP ärgerlich beiseite. Hat das alles mit "Durchschnittlichkeit" zu tun oder hält E.C. schlicht und ergreifend jenes Niveau, das wir von Beginn an beschert bekamen?
Gewiß, es gibt mit "Watch Your Step" eine schöne Ballade aus der "Alison"-Großfamilie. "Clubland" ist zweifellos ein gelungener Opener im üblichen Coslello-Mitteltempo und "White Knuckles" bringt die ganze Geschichte in flotten Trab. Dennoch: der Eindruck ist nicht wegzureden, daß Elvis Unscheinbar diese seine Ausstrahlung mehr und mehr auf die Songs überträgt. Positiv gesagt: das ist halt sein Stil. Negativ formuliert: er beklaut sich selbst. Positiv: Bewahrtes mag er nicht aufgeben. Negativ: ihm fällt nichts mehr ein.
Trust - sollen wir ihm also weiterhin vertrauen? Trust - stößt ein imaginärer Costello-Konzern nur noch seriell Ware aus? Ein Song dieser LP heiß "Shot With His Own Gun". Über eventuellen Hintersinn möge bitteschön jeder Leser selbst entscheiden.
