ELVIS COSTELLO & THE IMPOSTERS

Patrik Forshage

SKIVBOLAG: LOST HIGHWAY/UNIVERSAL
ARTIST: ELVIS COSTELLO & THE IMPOSTERS

"In a certain light he looked like Elvis (förmodligen den andra Elvis, men smart ändå. Min anm), in a certain way he seemed like Jesus". There's A Story In Your Voice.

Is not this man starting to be fööör bothersome? In his hubris, which manifests itself in a desire to master all existing styles of music, his records have become increasingly confused and sprawling, with Ann- Sofie Von Otter duets as absolute low point. Then, when fewer and fewer, apart from Polar Music Jury, cares about his new disc secures Elvis Costello instead their income by repeatedly giving out their old, in increasingly expanded DeLuxe editions - soon we enter the fourth lap and triple CD editions. This time he releases two albums on the same day , and the "serious" orchestral piece Il Sogno, and also The Delivery Man. And since it is released on a record label where you play Americana so Elvis adapts and does just that, with pedal steel and guests Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams. Though a little self-consciously smarter americana than what everyone else can, of course. Steve Nieve's small piano quote from West Side Story is intended to demonstrate the versatility of Elvis Costello's music, but they have been blasted into the truly irritating americana travesty Button My Lip, sung by " a desperate man about to commit a serious crime. " Instead of properly impress succeed alone make this reviewer is just so desperate, with Mr Costello or at least his record as a crime victim. At best, today's Elvis Costello is a smart, competent, and by boring artist. The title track is a really neat ballad, be amazed and admire from both a musical and lyrical aspects, and then never return to. "In a certain light he looked like Elvis (presumably the other Elvis, but clever nonetheless. My note), in a certainkind way he seemed like Jesus." Even sobbing ballad Country Darkness has obvious qualities , although it sounds as much pretending country as old Almost Blue and single Monkey To Man, a belated response to Dave Bartholomew's 50 years old The Monkey, is worthy of attention not only because it mentions the honorable Mr. Bartholomew by name. Not to mention how uninhibited Lucinda Williams cuts loose in their duet There's A Story In Your Voice. Sufficiently many redeeming features to help the listener to control his bad temper , that is. Until it is found that The Delivery Man is not a slice, but a "song cycle" about Abel - no, the symbolism is not subtle - carrying his guilty conscience after an unmentionable crimes during the childhood years. A "song cycle " based on a newspaper article Elvis Costello read in 1986 and has written songs about since. Then damn, when enough is enough. Can no sane person follow Bonnie Bramlett's example and give England's Jump the Gun a fat punch in the face ?
