Country Costello

Walter Carter

Elvis Costello's latest album, Almost Blue, a collection of country songs, was recorded in Nashville, and the British new waver is continuing the connection with a concert here Jan. 3 at the Grand Ole Opry House.

Costello's Nashville appearance is one stop in only a five-city tour, with other concerts set for London, Los Angeles, New York and Paris, France.

Almost Blue was recorded at CBS studios here and produced by Billy Sherrill, one of the most successful producers in country music. Many of the songs, too, are proven country material from artists like Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, George Jones and Loretta Lynn.

Instrumentation, however is by Costello's band, the Attractions, with help from John McFee of the Doobie Brothers on lead guitar and pedal steel.

On the upcoming tour, Costello's shows will be divided into two sets. McFee will join the band for an opening set of country music, the Attractions will play Costello's rock material for the second set.
