The Only Flame In Town

Elvis Costello And The Attractions

Paolo Hewitt

Nothing to add to the spot on review the LP received last week except that Goodbye Cruel World sounds more like a man hurrying out of his contract. "The Only Flame" is one of the very few times on the LP where Elvis exudes a conviction and a purpose within this gorgeous music, where he doesn't sound like a parody of ... Elvis Costello. A keenly observed song about the power balance which exists in relationships, it carries a weight that Costello seems to have temporarily misplaced elsewhere. Perhaps he just wants to be loved.

Later in LA, McCabe's said goodbye to its star booking agent Nancy Covey with the combined talents of Elvis Costello, T Bone Burnette, Warren Zevon, Jackson Browne (whoo-eee!), Ry Cooder, John Hiatt and more — none of whom are participating in the Olympics. Costello, tellingly enough, led a joint ending to the evening with "So You Want To Be A Rock 'n' Roll Star."
