Elvis Costello looks set to sign a new deal with the WEA group, four years after a distribution wrangle led to a split with the company.

NME understands Costello has already signed with Warner Brothers in America and the label is hot favourite for the UK contract. He fell out with WEA in 1983 when the company was distributing his F-Beat label. The row prevented Costello from releasing any records under his own name at the time, so he became The Imposter to issue the single "Pills & Soap" on the Imp label.

Shortly afterwards distribution was switched to RCA until that particular agreement ran out just before the release of Blood & Chocolate — Costello's first "indie" album since My Aim Is True.

Lew Difford, financial controller of Demon, which has the rights to the complete Costello back catalogue, said: "Elvis is talking to a number of labels, including WEA."
