Sweet Dreams
Elvis Costello
Julie Burchill
Minstrels in maudlin mood. "I should have known you'd never share my name," whines Elvis Costello. Well, we can't all be called ELVIS! There is such a thing as swinging, non-po country music — I'm thinking of early Dolly Parton such as "Dumb Blonde" and "I Don't Want To Throw Rice" — but the stuff Costello is currently giving the kiss of life to is no less or more than a mawkish bore, an attempt to make a manifesto out of being another just another notch on Tammy Wynette's wardrobe.
