Elvis Costello
With the added Attraction of keyboardist Steve Nieve, Costello performs songs from his new record All This Useless Beauty, out this week. Since the record’s a collection of songs Costello wrote for other artists – including Aimee Mann and Roger McGuinn – one has to wonder about the title’s pearls-before-swine overtones. The songs don’t need Elvis’s mannerisms to work and they’re hardly brought to new heights by the Attractions’ treatment, through they’re very serviceable and dependably varied. Still, a visit by Costello, who still ranks among the handful of the best songwriters of his generation, is always worth attending. If the piano-man settings are a bit spare for your taste, a full-fledged Attractions tour is rumoured for the summer. 5/21 at 8 P.M., Supper Club, 240 W. 47th St. (921-1940).
