Elvis Costello plays Whitney Museum's goodbye gala

Ian Mohr

"They asked me to only play hit tunes tonight, which is difficult because I don't have any," joked Elvis Costello at the Whitney Museum's final gala at its Breuer building before it moves downtown.

Julian Schnabel grooved to Costello classics in a room with fellow artists Cindy Sherman, Jeff Koons, Chuck Close, Lawrence Weiner, Jonas Mekas, Tom Sachs, Kara Walker, George Condo and Brice Marden.

Museum director Adam Weinberg said the new Whitney will open May 1. Co-chair Brooke Neidich admitted she wept earlier from nostalgia, then found Weinberg’s excitement infectious.

Among 600 at a Louis Vuitton dinner were collectors Beth Rudin DeWoody and Amy Phelan, gallerists Arne Glimcher and Andrea Rosen and Bob Colacello, Susan Hess, Lauren Bush Lauren, Nigel and Cristen Barker, and Hilary Rhoda, who dazzled in a gown by designer and Whitney vice president Pamella Roland.
