New York — Elvis Costello has lined up his first slate of U.S. tour dates in support of his forthcoming Island album When I Was Cruel. Currently confirmed dates kick off May 18 in Portland, Ore., and last through a June 24 show in Atlanta. A spokesperson for the artist was not able to confirm whether or not more dates will be added.
Costello has also lined up a considerable number of promotional appearances surrounding the April 15 U.K. and April 23 U.S. release of When I Was Cruel. The artist will perform April 15 in Amsterdam, and the following night in London. Prior to the London gig at the Astoria, he'll sign copies of the album at the Virgin Megastore's Oxford St. location.
In the U.S., Costello plans to perform and sign autographs at Tower Records locations in Philadelphia (April 19), Chicago (April 21), and New York (April 23). In addition, a pair of private performances are planned for the latter two cities: on April 18, Costello will perform at the Bowery Ballroom in New York for an audience of Rolling Stone contest winners, and then on April 21 at Chicago's House of Blues for winners of a contest sponsored by local radio outlet WXRT.
On the album's U.S. release date, Costello will return to the stage of CBS' The Late Show With David Letterman, followed two nights later by a performance on NBC's Last Call With Carson Daly. On April 27, he's set to appear on CBS' Saturday Early Show.
A new episode of cable outlet Bravo's Musicians series, taped March 9 in New York, will premiere April 29 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, and will be rebroadcast the next day. The hour-long show — which has in the past featured such diverse guests as Barry Manilow, Alanis Morissette, Lou Reed, and Tony Bennett — is hosted by Rolling Stone contributing editor David Wild, and will feature Costello in performance and conversation.
In other news, a new presentation of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream scored by Costello will premiere July 11 at Royce Hall on the campus of the University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA). Tickets are on sale through the university's Web site for the show's four planned performances. As previously reported, Costello is UCLA's first Artist in Residence for the school's performing arts program, UCLA Live. In his role, he is curating a season of events and programs that has already found him performing with the Charles Mingus Orchestra.
All of this activity follows Rhino's Feb. 19 release of its second batch of Elvis Costello reissues. In this volley, the new versions of This Year's Model (1978), Blood and Chocolate (1986), and Brutal Youth (1994) feature each album in its originally issued form plus a bonus disc of rarities, as well as a 28-page booklet with new liner notes by Costello, song lyrics, rare photos, and reproductions of memorabilia from the era.
