Gigant nové vlny Elvis Costello vystoupí poprvé v Praze
V pátek se v pražském Kongresovém centru v komorním programu představí jedna z nejvýraznějších postav anglické nové vlny, zpěvák a kytarista Elvis Costello. Vycházel z pub rocku, ale během let absorboval ve své pestré a invenční tvorbě mnohé další styly, jako byl soul, rhythm and blues či country a rockabilly nebo punk a jazz. Skládal písně se svou ženou Dianou Krall i Paulem McCartneym.

Pokud si někdo novou vlnu spojuje jen s Police, Stranglers a Talking Heads a (ne Duran Duran a Depeche Mode skutečně nejsou představitelé nové vlny), tak její záběr docela zužuje a pomíjí jednu z nejvýraznějších postav anglické scény konce sedmdesátých let, jíž byl Elvis Costello, vlastním jménem Declan McManus.
Zpočátku se orientoval podobně jako Ian Dury na pub rock s výraznými prvky country, což ještě umocnilo spojení s kytaristou Nickem Lowem. Ten mu produkoval v roce 1977 album My Aim Is True, které přineslo směs ostrých písní na pomezí punku a pub rocku s ohlasy dalších žánrů. Je na ní vidět, že Costello kdysi poslouchal jako správný obyvatel Liverpoolu Beatles, ale také Kinks, od nichž si vzal sarkasmus, i soul a Burta Bacharacha.
S kapelou Attraction natočil další skvělá alba This Years Model a Armed Forces, na počátku osmdesátých let si ale uvědomil, že nová vlna už není tak nová a obohacuje svůj zvuk o postupy soulu. Nechal se inspirovat Hankem Williamsem. V roce 1982 se pak objevuje pocta Beatles Imperiail Bedroom, kde hrál na trubku Chet Baker. Costello však Beatles nejen obdivoval, jeho talent byl tak velký, že později spolupracoval s Paulem McCartneyem, se kterým napsal několik písní.
O šíři záběru a neutuchající chuti hledat nové formy vyjádření svědčí deska The Juliet Letters z počátku devadesátých let, kde ho doprovázel Brodsky Quartet. Vybočení to nebylo ojedinělé, v novém tisíciletí naspal i komorní operu The Secrets Songs. Costello však natáčel také s jazzovým pianistou Billem Frisellem a skládal písně se svou třetí ženou, jazzovou zpěvačkou a pianistkou Dianou Krall. Výčet jeho hudebních partnerů je však ještě mnohem širší, objevuje se mezi nimi i teoretik ambientu Brian Eno a další.
