Elvis Costello & The Roots - Wise Up Ghost

Pierre Oitmann

Alternatief

Elvis Costello & The Roots - Wise Up Ghost

English via Google Translate...

As house band of talk show host Jimmy Fallon has hip-hop band The Roots collaborated with many other quantity, but a full album with the bespectacled Briton Elvis Costello is nevertheless very special.

Roots member Questlove initially approached Costello with the idea to combine a number of songs from him to remix and after a positive response, the musician suggested to the forces for a larger project. That was Wise Up Ghost, filled with brand new songs written by Costello and Questlove.

Costello and The Roots were assisted by producer Steven Mandel. The songs were largely contained in a small area of the television studios of NBC and the end result was published by the renowned jazz label Blue Note Records. However, cooperation is better categorized as soul and funk.

Wise Up Ghost is truly the best of both worlds. The typical voice Costello appears very suitable for dry hiphop beats that of Wake Me Up and Refused To Be Saved, the pumping funk rhythms of Sugar Won't Work and the old urban soul sounds of Walk Us Uptown and Come The Meantimes.

Alternative

Several times seem Costello and The Roots to refer to works of Isaac Hayes from the 70s, creamy nu-soul of D'Angelo and playful hip-hop A Tribe Called Quest. Rapper Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter is otherwise entirely absent on the disc, but Costello's drawling vocals show a great alternative on Cinco Minutos Con Vos.

Who attention listening to the lyrics, moreover hears Costello older songs are reused several times without the songs shameless remakes of his better-known repertoire. The sweet-voiced Tripwire and the ballad If I Could Believe are the most characteristic Costello songs on an otherwise amazing record.
