Elvis Costello cancela shows em Israel por questões 'complexas'

Stefano Ambrogi

Elvis Costello cancels concerts in Israel for 'complex' issues

English via Google Translate

Singer-songwriter Elvis Costello has canceled two concerts in Israel in the middle of this year because of "serious and complex" issues related to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, he said.

Costello was invited to perform at the Amphitheatre Caesarea, north of Tel Aviv, on June 30 and July 1.

But on his website, he said: " After considerable contemplation, I came to the decision that I remove myself from the two concerts. "

He joins other artists like Gil Scott-Heron and Santana have canceled their tours in Israel in recent months.

Costello said he expected the music to be more than " mere noise, filling idle time ".

But he added: "There are times when simply adding your name to a show schedule can be interpreted as a political act that has more impact than what is sung ... "

Costello said the upcoming shows have been attended by many people who question Israeli policies " on settlement and deplore conditions of intimidation , humiliation or worse against Palestinian civilians in the name of national security. "

He apologized to fans, and many of the Israeli media that helped him better understand the cultural scene.
