Droning along
Elvis Costello And The Attractions / Armed Forces
Chris Cobb
There's something decidedly boring about most of Elvis Costello's music in general and something decidedly boring about this album in particular. In fact, the bespectacled singer's recording career has gone from not bad to very mediocre. His third LP doesn't have the promising music of the first and second albums. Commenting on the lyrics is quite difficult because most of them are inaudible. Drone is the word that immediately comes to mind while listening to this record. It drones on and on — almost sounding like a one-song album. If new wave music were the only sound around, Elvis Costello would be heralded as a musical genius. Fortunately, there's a lot better music than this available and Elvis has got a long way to go before he even begins to be worthy of the accolades bestowed upon him.
